Hi, we're OK Great, a tight-knit crew of designers, writers + artists, hell-bent on delivering the best in art, design and culture. The world is a big pile of awesome. We're the spoon. Dig in.
I remember when I graduated design school (yes, a long time ago), we had a Portfolio review. Dutch design studio LUST created an app for the inaugural electronic version of Items, titled Items Dutch Design Graduates 2011.
Included: 47 featured graduation projects from a dozen design schools of the area, plus opinions on the designers by some experts. Oh and there is also two essays on Dutch design education. The reader can filter by designer, school, discipline, medium, etc..
I just got waaaaaay too excited about this when I read about it on Creative Review’s blog (which, by the way, if that shit is not in your google reader, you are missing out).
The Ri Channel is a new online project by the Royal Institution showcasing the very best science videos from the Ri and around the web with an aim to “connect people to the world of science.” Well, if it looks this good and Carl Sagan is on the front page, I’m sold. And definitely connected.
LetterMpress is a will be a virtual letterpress environment (application), released first on the iPad that will allow anyone to create authentic-looking letterpress designs and prints. The creators intend to introduce a service where a user can have their LetterMpress designs turned into authentic letterpress prints. They are hoping creatives will donate some coin to the cause and help make this happen. Peeps that donate $10 bucks or more receive a promo-code to download the app (when released), a print press thank you card and your name on their site. Though nothing can really capture the raw awesomeness and magical process of the real thing, this is a good step forward.
On July 24, 2010, a ton of people around the world got together to document their day, taking part in an ambitious visual experiment. Following that day, over 80,000 clips were edited down to make what looks to be an amazing documentary, spearheaded by wonder-team Kevin MacDonald and Ridley Scott.
The best thing about this, you can watch the premiere live from sundance film festival 2011, on youtube, on January 27. Right here.
I love the internet.
Happy Monday!
UPDATE! Congrats to our winners! Carolin, Dylan, Brendan and I each picked a winner from the great entries below. Carolin picked Matt, Dylan picked Amelie, Brendan picked Euan, and I picked Zara. We’ll each individually be in touch with the winners for your invite code. For those of you that didn’t win, make sure you follow @Designspiration on twitter or just search twitter for DSPN – lots of folks have invites to go around.
As designers, we’re always looking for fresh content and inspiration to discover and save to help give us that spark that pushes us down that next creative road. Sites like ffffound have served this purpose for a while, but, let’s be honest – spend 90 seconds on ffffound and you’ll be staring at boobies. I think it’s like one of those 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon things, but on ffffound, it’s impossible to click through 6 images without ending up in (albeit usually fairly tasteful) nudes – not particularly useful when looking for, say, branding inspiration.
Enter Designspiration, a new venture by Shelby White (aka Wanken, ironically, considering his new site is free of boobies). White posts regularly on his blog, as well as contributes to the ever-popular ISO50, where he has a pretty in-depth process piece about building DSPN. Designspiration seems to be off to a good, well-curated start – already some really great content in there. The site is really well-done too, with few distractions and clever UI enhancements throughout that make searching and discovering pretty fun. Also, legit attribution, which is nice.
DSPN is an invite-only community (for posting; viewing is open of course), but we have a couple of invites to give away. Keeping the posting community invite-only ensures that the quality of the content is as high as it can be, but I’m confident that quite a large majority of our faithful readers would be great content curators at DSPN. So we’re going to give a couple invites away. Leave a comment below this post with a link to an image that has inspired you lately – Something that really got the creative juices flowing. We’ll look at the responses and pick a few to offer invites. Contest closes on Friday.
Holy crap this is cool. Dentsu London has been experimenting with the iPad and extruded type to create 3D looking words and shapes. At about 3 minutes in, it really starts getting nuts. They begin to create more stop motion looking animations using geometric shapes. This is the video school tech geek cousin of Light Painting and I look forward to seeing where Dentsu London takes it next.
