Hi, we're OK Great, a tight-knit crew of designers, writers + artists, hell-bent on delivering the best in art, design and culture. The world is a big pile of awesome. We're the spoon. Dig in.
Monika Patuszynska has been working in porcelain ceramics for over ten years now. A Polish artist, she has begun experimenting with the timeline of her process; namely, working backwards for form. Instead of beginning with casting and molding, she’s leaving that as one of the last acts. In her latest line, Transformy, you can see that Patuszynska has created something entirely new and exciting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it and I surely have never posted about ceramics – it usually doesn’t make my head turn like this has.
Patuszynska, after many years of creating sleekly functional pieces (that you might find at an upscale retail store in Helsinki, maybe?) has decided to embrace the jagged imperfections of the unknown. It looks natural, like eroding caverns, evokes time and history in one bowl. I really like exploring her work on her site – to see how far she’s come from simpler bowls and plates. It’s exciting to see the progression. Perhaps it’s not the ideal tea time mug, but isn’t it a hell of a lot more interesting than that?
It isn’t often that we get to collaborate with artists. It’s even less likely to be given a chance to create a magical wonderland within one’s office. My friend and co-worker and amazingly talented JJ and I were lucky to have been volunteered for this year’s W+K Holiday decorating.
We wanted to create an enchanted tale of a holiday where unicorns, narwhals, white wolves with wings, yetis and more come together, under one roof that holds both earth, water and sky. With white furry walls, type on the walls, and lots of magic. But we needed to first find an artist (or an artist couple) that would be able to translate our vision of the creatures and make it theirs. These are the results. Magic happens with collaboration. This week, think of who you want to collaborate with and do it.
The objects are all representative of weapons/items used in acts of crime in South Africa, both by criminal and the law.
The objects seek to playfully examine the place of fear and crime in South Africa context, framing our obsession with violence and the casual paranoia we all seem to suffer from. By scaling the objects and turning them into artworks, the artists aim to re-contextualise the place these items hold in our everyday lives.
French artist Guy le Tatooer’s tattoo arm exhibition at the gimpel & muller gallery in Paris looks amazing. These stunning tattoos do a good job of outweighing the whole severed hanging arm creep factor. Give Guy a hand, actually give him a whole arm because he may make a silicone replica of it, skillfully ink it and use it in his next show.
Not that I live in NYC. Not that this exhibit is actually still on site. BUT DAMN. Can you guys imagine having been there? Watch the whole thing. With headphones please.
Many of you are probably familiar with the artists/toy makers/creators of all things cute+happy, FriendsWithYou. To celebrate the opening of Section 2 of the High Line Park in NYC, they teamed up with AOL to create a 40-piece environmental installation called Rainbow City. As you can see from the pictures above, this installation is pretty much a playground of brightly colored inflatable creatures, and it looks like so much fun! If you are planning a visit to NYC, the exhibition will be open until July 5, so you still have some time to swing by and check it out. You can visit FriendsWithYou’s website for more photos & information.
This is what the stock market ticker should look like.
Created by Martin Bircher, Type Case is a low-resolution display with 125 rectangular pixels of different sizes. Looking at the case up close, it just looks like random flashing lights. Take a couple steps back and now a type form appears. By design, the subtle shadows created by those 125 LEDs gives a very calculated and distinct shape to the European type faces it produces.
I really appreciate the fact that you need to take a step back to really see and understand it. I always need to take a step back from my work / life to see it for what it really is.
So I’ve only been to Coachella once, and to this day it continues to be my best festival experience. This year though, Intel and Vice got together via their Creators Project, to encourage collaboration between the brightest of artists, geniuses and designers and to create an experience that would enhance the live performances and blow people’s minds. This makes me GREEN WITH ENVY to not have witnessed the spectacle live.
Spend some time on the website—all the artists are ridiculous. and inspiring enough to make your week full of magic.
Um, yeah. So the UK creative company IWANT design is exactly what I want to do with my life. Take the image above – branding, photography and design for London Dance International. It’s a complete idea. Meaning, this is not just an interesting print piece with good looking graphics, or a well lit photograph of dancers. It’s an entirely complete and stunning visual idea. We should all be so lucky to have such inspiring visions and…clients that allow us to run away with them at full speed.
