Alexandros Vasmoulakis. Greek AWESOME.

Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis is one of those people that makes me go green-ish with envy. In a good way, of course. I love love love his street art, and it’s fascinating to see how successful his work is across whatever media he chooses.

His first solo show in the U.S., “Is Everybody Happy,” is on display at LeBasse Projects in Culver City until the end of this week. Go see it if you are in the area.

Here’s what the press release says ( I certainly couldn’t formulate it this way):
Alexandros Vasmoulakis’s essential incentive is the desire for unveiling images and sounds from social revolts and individual agitations. This is portrayed in the disproportionate bodies and faces that act as reflective mirrors to their inner psychology. His images are opposed to any established identity; they constantly work under a process of modification that constructs innovative grounds as a purpose to deconstruct them. He unites this ambiguous transcendental happiness with a pandemonium of symbols and signs in order to build a playground of disarray. The incomplete and erased drawings are intentionally depicted with the purpose of highlighting as well as embracing the aspect of imperfection.

Adam The Velcro Suit

Uh, yeah. I stumbled upon this portfolio via Flickr + unfortunately could not find any information about this cryptic artist that only goes by the name Adam The Velcro Suit. On second thought, maybe that’s not unfortunate. It’s kind of awesome. Adam’s portfolio is basically just a hefty serving of retro styled show posters with some cards + prints served on the side. Mmmm.

Local people: on September 19th, LaborLove Gallery in Durham is hosting a showcase of local graffiti art, “Bombed: Panels, Picks and Kicks”.  Four local painters (Window-Down Crew) are going to work it out on 4′ x 8′ panels at the gallery during the days immediately before the show.  DJ’s + a breakdance crew will round out opening night.

The LaborLove people just released this time-lapse video of the artists working on two panels.  I’m sold.  See you there, fools.

Sonnenzimmer is a print + design shop on the Northside of Chicago run by artists Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi.  Their style really stands out to me, especially in the realm of current show posters.

Is anyone else seeing similarities between some of these posters and the design of Krautrock and acid jazz records?  More after the jump.

I first heard about artist Jason Munn while at my previous job, working in the direct-to-consumer branch of a record distribution company where we carried Mark Kozelek posters that Mr. Munn had designed and printed (including the one below).

Jason sells most of these posters on his website, The Small Stakes.  The posters are really large and the screen printing is super professional.  Oh, and they’re mad cheap at $25 bucks a pop.  Go buy his shit!jm11.jpg
