Check out Canadian artist Howie Tsui. His newest series, “Horror Fables” (looks just like it sounds) seems to combine elements of Japanese brush painting with dark, Western iconography for an unsettling effect. The collection of pieces created in 2008 + 2009 is also available for purchase as a book from Howie’s site.

Neawear is a Montreal-based company run by Janick, who quit her day job as a graphic designer to focus on making jewelery and embroidery. Her Etsy shop is full of wonderful things, and reading this interview she did makes me daydream about what I would do if I ever wanted to take a break from graphic design.

The latest installment of business card inspiration:

Most of the time I think interactive business cards get kind of tired kinf of fast but I like the relevance of these cards by Montreal design shop, Departement for “an industrial designer specializing in the design and manufacture of chairs.”  Not bad.

I’ve always been drawn to photography (and literature and movies and television and music) of the poor, hungry, or jailed.  The simple recognition of poverty, disease, or injustice by an artist is often enough to give voice to the voiceless.

And although Claire Martin is no Danny Lyon (Danny Lyon doesn’t have a website, sadly) her documentary style serves her subjects in Native American nations & Canadian ghettos well and honestly.

Like they say on The Wire, “Pay Attention”.
