This is the stuff that my dreams are made of (Ok I’m kind of a nerd). Since college, whenever I’ve told anyone that I majored in Math and Art, they always give me the weird-sideways-glance, like for some reason they believe that it’s totally impossible for someone to be able to work both sides of their brain at once. Enter Peter Crnokrak and his design practice The Luxury of Protest, out of London. He’s a former quantitative geneticist and his scientific and mathematical background clearly guide his work. But he also happens to be an extremely gifted designer with an eye for subtlety and perfection that is unfortunately all too uncommon. His work harkens back to the hey-days of 60’s Swiss Modernism, but with a twist of contemporary infographics that would make GOOD magazine’s designers woozy. Much of his work (especially the data visualization pieces) is based on generative mathematical code written in Python and then contextualized into a poster.

His Universal Declaration posters are also both visually and emotionally striking. Using only simple shapes in a grid, he’s able to dial in on some of the rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and display them in a way thats instantly understood.

Check out the rest of his portfolio – there are tons of gems in there.

Math IS Art. When I took math courses in college and had to do proofs…I would sometimes sit back and just look at the art of it all.

*phew* I knew there was someone else out there who did that. Thanks for making me not feel crazy anymore. Loved me some Analytics / Proving Calculus class.

I loved Calculus too. You’re not alone.
