No your monitor ain’t broke. The distortion you are seeing is the unique painting style of Andy Denzler. This Zurich based artist has blended both abstract expressionism and figurative photo realism together to create a very curious and beautiful body of work. His style reminds me of the distortion in conventional videotape based recordings when you pause on a single frame. Reinforcing the connection that this painting is a freeze frame in time.

Oh modernists. You rule my world. Specifically today, Rudolph De Harak.
Now if I were Steven Heller, I may have been able to write an article like this one. Instead, I’m just going to let the work speak for itself.
Happy Monday. Read the rest of this entry »

The Public Library does it again, folks. This week I found William Feaver’s When We Were Young, Two Centuries of Children’s Book Illustration and it was like seeing Gremlins for the first time in second grade. I didn’t sleep.
Regardless, the book is a fascinating collection of what kids across the universe were looking at by firelight years ago. The image above is by Heinrich Hoffman and the caption reads, “‘Ah!” said Mamma, “I knew he’d come to naughty little suck-a-thumb.”‘ Dang, Hoffman!
More illustrations after the jump.

Two design and planning graduates from NC State recently started a line of city inspired t-shirts called CityFabric. The screen-printed shirts feature figure-ground diagrams of cities ranging from Durham, NC to San Francisco. They currently have 17 cities to choose from. Go check out their website and support local business! Now I only need to decide whether I want the shirt for where I live or where I wish I lived…

Kevin Tong is a very talented artist + illustrator who creates some amazing screen prints. His style and technique are just killing it for me. Each piece has such imagination and vivid color. Check out his “Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wes Anderson” on flickr.
